Why are Implants the Best Choice for Replacing Missing Teeth?

Missing Teeth Implants Dentist in Charlottesville Area

If you have a missing tooth, it can detract from your smile and alter how well your teeth function. Dental implants are becoming increasingly more popular for individuals looking for long-term replacement options that also protect the jaw. At Bearley Dental in Charlottesville, Dr. Daniel Bearley provides dental implants that restore your smile and strengthen the jawbone.

The Process

Dental implants are metal posts that are embedded into the jawbone. They become more secure as the bone remodels itself around the post. Once the post is in place and the bone has completely healed, your dentist will attach a crown to the top to fill the gap and give you a more natural smile. Once the posts have healed, they will always be in place, strengthening the bone and providing a secure foundation for your teeth.

The Benefits

When you are missing one or more teeth, those surrounding the gap can begin to shift toward the opening. As the teeth move, they can start to throw off the alignment of your jaw and alter your bite pattern. If this is not corrected, it can result in pressure being placed on the TMJ joint. Pain and discomfort are the first sign that something is wrong. Visiting your dentist should be your next step.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Anyone with one or two missing teeth may be a good candidate for dental implants if their jawbone is still structurally sound. If the jaw has already started to wear away, there may not be enough bone left for the implant to be attached to. You will need to talk to your dentist to find out if dental implants are an option for you.
