Dental Crown Procedure in Charlottesville VA Area

Whether your damaged tooth is due to dental trauma or decay, you probably have had enough of it. An impaired tooth not only wrecks your smile but impedes your oral functionality. If the weight of a damaged tooth is weighing you down, it’s time to do something about it. Installing dental crowns from Bearley Dental in Charlottesville, Virginia, can restore the health and appearance of your teeth, giving you an improved tooth that looks and functions as good, if not better, than your original tooth.

What is a dental crown?

Before diving deep into the treatment, let’s get the basics out of the way. What’s a dental crown? Biologically speaking, a dental crown is the visible, white part you see on your tooth; it protects your tooth and forms the chewing part of your tooth. Cosmetically speaking, a dental crown is a customized, tooth-shaped cap placed on your tooth to enhance its performance.

Why you may need a dental crown

The primary purpose of a dental crown is to improve the shape, size, and functionality of a tooth. There are many situations when a dental crown can be used. Some include:

  • To restore a broken or decayed tooth
  • Crowns are used to anchor a bridge in place
  • To replace an old or broken filling
  • To complete the dental implant treatment
  • To protect a tooth after root canal therapy
  • To fill a tooth cavity that’s too large for a filling
  • To improve the aesthetics of a severely discolored tooth

Because crowns offer many aesthetic and non-aesthetic functions, they are at the center of most restorative and cosmetic procedures. And beyond functionality, porcelain crowns are colored to blend seamlessly with your smile. No one will notice you have crowns unless you say something.

Dental crown procedure

Getting crowns requires at least two appointments. The bulk of the work is done during the first appointment. After numbing your gums, we trim a portion of your tooth to create space for dental crowns. Once we have an ideal shape of your tooth, Dr. Daniel Bearley takes an impression of your bite to ensure the crown matches your bite. Next, we send the dental images to a dental lab to fabricate your crowns. As you wait for your permanent crowns, you will wear temporal ones to protect your prepped teeth.

After two weeks or so, your dental crowns will be ready for installation. Here, we anesthetize your tooth and remove the temporal crown. Dr. Bearley will test your crown and make any adjustments until your new appliance fits perfectly. Once the ideal fit is established, the dentist cements the dental crown permanently on your tooth.

After this process, you will now have a tooth that looks and functions much better.
